Michael Keith Stratton R. P. T.
Registered Professional Woodturner
Mike was originally taught his skills some 40 years ago at Dartington in South Devon and whilst there was accepted as a member of the Devon Guild of Craftsmen. A business move took us to the Cotswolds where we lived in a village by Stratford-upon-Avon. The practice of woodturning was lost for a period, hence the name Turnagain Woodwork. On returning to woodturning when Mike had a work place built, he spent some enjoyable time training with Keith Rowley, a fine craftsman who he greatly admired.
Following an examination Mike was accepted on the Register of The Worshipful Company of Turners.
He was a member of:
- The Worshipful Company of Turners
- The Association of Woodturners of Great Britain
- The Heart of England Woodturners
- Gloucestershire Association of Woodturners (also membership secretary of this club)
His aim was to promote all aspects of woodwork in an art form or utility form. By turning wood, a tree can live for ever and give continual pleasure. Save a tree and purchase a piece of turned wood.
Mike enjoyed his days of woodwork with all his other hobbies, the main one being motorsport, either competing or organising. There never seemed a minute to spare.
Our lives were 101% full and I thank him for that.
Mike will be sadly missed by GAW. He was membership secretary for many years and he and Hilary worked very hard running our display and sales at Westonbirt. His wood sales on Club nights were very successful and most appreciated. His club demonstrations were very well received. The enthusiasm he had for woodturning was infectious and he inspired and encouraged novice turners.
